很多人苦惱論文裡的數字該用英文（one, two, three..）還是阿拉伯數字（1,2,3….）来呈現，這個牽扯到論文的整體格式是使用 APA 還是 MLA 而有所不同。

APA Style
1. 以阿拉伯數字方式
- 數字超過10
12 years old, 57th trial - Unit of measurement前的數字
5-mg dose, 24 mm - 統計學或數學計算時使用情況
Multiplied by 5 或 0.33 of the ~ - 表現比例或機率時
More than 5% of the sample, a ratio of 15:1 - 時間、日期、年紀、分數、錢的總計等情況
1hr 34 min, at 3:30am, 2-years olds, score 3 on a 10 point scale. 5 days
例外：時間或日期以大數值表現時例外“about five days”
2. 以英文方式呈現
- 比10小(以上除外)
- 數字在句子或題目等文章的最前面時
Forty-eight percent of the sample…, Twelve students improved… - 一般內容
one fifth of the class…, two-thirds majority - 被廣泛認知所使用的單字

MLA Style
1. 以英文字母方式呈現
- 一個單字或兩個單字來表現數字時
three, fifteen, seventy-six, one thousand, twelve billion
2. 以阿拉伯數字方式呈現
- 無法以一兩個單字呈現數字時
2¾; 584; 1,001; 25,000,000 - Measurement terms
3 centimeters - 比較數據時
the scores rose from 7 to 12 - 日期、金額、比例或“lb”等以數字呈現時(%, lb. $)
- 在第一句使用數字時
寫一般英文essay或英文文章
- 10 以下，用英文字母
- 有些專家也推薦像twelve或twenty這種可以用一個單字表現，可以用英文字母(無規則)
- 句子一開始就是數字時，用字母拼寫
- 表達世紀或10年(decades)時，以Letter呈現
